Hotel Atlantis
Programme: Arturs Maskats
Performers: Latvian Radio Choir and soloists, conductor Sigvards Kļava, Viesturs Kairišs (director), Ieva Jurjāne (set and costume designer)

Viesturs Kairišs, director of the performance, says:“Atlantis – a legendary island that sank into the depth of sea in a single day together with its population, as a result of a natural calamity. The story about Atlantis is deemed to be a philosophical metaphor invented by Plato, or a myth telling of an ancient and real disaster. There exist a number of myths about Aleksandrs Čaks. An urban poet, a modernist, a tragic figure. However, Čaks is also a poet of impossible feelings, mental pain and loneliness. This is the sunken world where the meeting between Arturs Maskats and Aleksandrs Čaks occurs. A meeting in the empty rooms of “Hotel ‘Atlantis’” where one can get to know his inner world once again, and one’s joy and sorrow. Certainly, Atlantis is also a metaphor for Latvia during the inter-war period, which was lost by us, and a metaphor for present-day Latvia – with such a real possibility of losing it. However, mostly these will be songs about the lost city in oneself – sensuality, love, challenge and endless pain of loneliness.”
