The Ave Maria prayer is the key element of the new Latvian Radio Choir’s concert program AVE MARIA of the Sacred Chants cycleThe choir's conductor and the artistic director of the concert – Kaspars Putniņš admits: “We are used to this text and the image of the Saint Mary, but often accept such big concepts without really going into deeper reflection. I believe that the Virgin Mary encompasses two essential opposites – on one hand, it is impossible to imagine a more fragile, gentle, feminine and caring being than Mary, but, on the other hand, she is characterized by unimaginable courage and strength, which allow her to make decisions, which if not destroy, will definitely turn her life upside down. However, Mary is a life-affirming image that says “yes” to the God and the universal truth, and she is well able to carry out the mission throughout all her life. The Ave Maria is probably one of the most melodized texts ever, and, within the framework of the cycle, I was reflecting on the visions of those various composers. I always prefer that the concerts do not become a museum of one epoch; they should rather turn into a discussion beyond the time. The effect of the presence of the Ave Maria on the brink of the grand dramatic events is very essential, and, probably, we could perceive that as the balancing mechanism of all our lives and the progress of the world.”
